During the Senate hearing on immigration reform yesterday, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, promoted the idea of legal immigration reform but argued that a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants was too divisive.

“I would note that I don’t think there is any issue in this entire debate that is more divisive than a path to citizenship for those that are here illegally,” Cruz asserted. “In my view any bill that insists upon that, jeopardizes the likelihood of passing any immigration reform bill.”

Fixing the legal immigration system, Cruz argued, was a bipartisan way to pass immigration reform.

“I think we should all be champions of legal immigrants making the system work and not just welcoming, but celebrating legal immigrants,” Cruz explained.

Cruz reminded his Senate colleagues that he was deeply connected to the immigration debate, as the son of a Cuban immigrant, and the grandson of a farm worker in Cuba.

“I hope that that reform legislation will not be held hostage to an issue that is deeply, deeply, divisive as the pathway to citizenship,” Cruz added.
