A 19-year-old District man admitted to pulling the trigger in the slaying of Shaw Middle School principal after the two met on an internet sex chat line.
Alante Saunders pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Monday in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Rockville.
Saunders, who was 18 at the time of the shooting earlier this year, said he went to the Silver Spring home of Brian Betts and found the door unlocked. Saunders said went upstairs while his friends stayed downstairs to loot the home.
Betts and Saunders got into a struggle, and Betts was killed with a single gunshot, according to charging documents.
Saunders’ attorney David Felson said the shooting was accidental.
Betts’ body was found April 15.
Saunders and the Montgomery County State’s Attorneys office have agreed to a sentence of life in prison with all but 40 years suspended.Saunders will be eligible for parole after 20 years.
