A high-school senior died after he fell off a skateboard and was run over by his friend's pickup truck in Arlington, officials said.

The incident took place at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of S. Highland Street. Both the driver and the victim were students at Washington-Lee High School and the Arlington Career Center.

John Malvar, 18, had been on a skateboard while holding onto the driver's side of his friend's pickup truck that was traveling northbound on S. Highland Street. But Malvar lost his balance, fell off the skateboard and had his head run over by a pickup truck, Arlington police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

Malvar was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

Charges are pending against the pickup truck's driver, a 17-year-old male high-school junior, Sternbeck said.
