An 18-year-old girl was shot in Southeast D.C. while on her way to school, police said.

The incident occurred about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 1400 block of Morris Road SE. The teen was walking to catch a Metrobus so that she could get to Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School, a magnet school in Northeast D.C.

The teen had been shot in the leg, and her book bag was taken, D.C. police spokesman Officer Anthony Clay said. She was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are looking for a black male who was armed and wearing a black jacket and red face mask.
