FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A North Texas school district in the fall is planning to launch a new course for high school students that's believed to be the first such offering in the state.

Energy tycoon T. Boone Pickens spoke at a luncheon Thursday for the unveiling of the new elective in U.S. military history. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/11H2G4p ) the Fort Worth school district will offer the class to those in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, with an eye toward eventually expanding it. Social studies courses touch on aspects of military history but the new class will provide greater detail, including on Texas' role in American military history.

The special topics elective class is worth one credit toward graduation but does not take the place of required social studies coursework.
