Woman sexually assaulted at mall garage in Arlington

A 23-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in a parking garage for the Ballston Common Mall, officials said.

About 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the woman was returning to her vehicle and was within feet of her car on the fourth floor of the garage when the suspect approached her from behind, lifted her skirt and fondled her. The woman screamed, causing the suspect to run away, Arlington police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

The woman, an Arlington resident, drove away from the garage and called police, Sternbeck said. She refused medical attention.

3-year-old boy drowns

Anne Arundel County police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy who was reported to have drowned.

About 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to the 600 block of Old Riverside Road in Brooklyn for a report of a drowning.

Witnesses told police the boy was at a function with his family, and toward the end of the evening family members realized he was missing. His father found him at the bottom of a pool, officials said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, and he was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday.

MontCo police fatally shoot man at restaurant

Police fatally shot an armed man at a restaurant in Montgomery County, authorities said.

About 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers went to Urban Bar-B-Que at 805 Olney Sandy Spring Road, in response to a call about a man with a gun. When they arrived, officers saw in the restaurant's outdoor dining area a man with a firearm, police said.

Officers tried to communicate with the man and gave him verbal commands, but the man refused to comply, police said. Two officers fired their service weapons.

The officers were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
