Boy, 3, dies after falling from window in Loudoun
A 3-year-old boy has died after falling from a third-story window in Loudoun County, officials said. Early Sunday afternoon, the boy fell from the window at his home on Raspberry Drive in Leesburg. The window was open and he fell through the screen, said Liz Mills, a spokeswoman with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. The boy, whose name was not released, was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died Monday afternoon. Mills said the incident appears to have been a "tragic accident." She said parents should consider installing window guards or window stops or should open windows from the top.
100 weapons surrendered in P.G. gun exchange
Community members surrendered about 100 weapons during the Gift Cards for Guns event over the weekend in Prince George's County, police said. At the Saturday event at Oxon Hill United Methodist Church, people could voluntarily turn in firearms in exchange for gift cards. For every weapon turned in, a citizen could receive a Visa gift card with a value of up to $100, depending on the type of weapon. Prince George's County police partnered with the NAACP and the Prince George's County Youth Strategies Division for the event. The initiative is an effort to help reduce gun violence, police said.
Capitol Heights man arrested in carjacking
A Capitol Heights man who was wanted an armed carjacking in Prince George's County has been arrested, authorities said. Calvin Pettaway, 22, faces charges including armed carjacking and assault, according to the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office. On Aug. 9, Pettaway pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded his vehicle on the 1000 block of 59th Avenue in Seat Pleasant. The victim complied, and Pettaway fled. Sheriff's deputies located him in Capitol Heights on Monday and apprehended him without incident.
