Employee shot in Walmart parking lot

A Walmart employee was shot in a parking lot outside the Laurel store where he works, officials said.

About 4:15 a.m. Wednesday, emergency personnel went to the Walmart on the 3500 block of Russett Green East in Laurel.

According to an initial investigation, the shooter entered the Walmart, approached the employee and demanded money from the store. After the employee turned over money, the robber forced him outside and later shot him in the upper body, Anne Arundel County police officials said.

The employee, a 28-year-old man, was taken to a trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooter is described as a white male who was wearing a dark mask, black pants, a black jacket and a gray or white sweatshirt with a hood. He fled the scene in a dark-colored van, which was found on fire at Hammerstone Road and Mayaone Street.

Undercover detective charged with DWI

An undercover Loudoun County sheriff's detective was charged with driving while intoxicated, officials said.

The detective is a 10-year member of the sheriff's office, but the agency said it would not release his name. He has been placed on paid administrative leave.

About 12:30 a.m. Saturday, detectives went to the area of the Lansdowne Town Center and learned that the detective had struck two parked vehicles while driving his personal car. A sheriff's office spokeswoman said the detective was not working at the time.
