2 killed in Beltway crash

Two Silver Spring residents were killed and six people were injured in a Christmas Eve crash on the Outer Loop of Capital Beltway near Connecticut Avenue, police said.

A 2008 Chevrolet Malibu lost control going into a turn and spun out, striking a 1994 Toyota truck. A 2010 Chevrolet Silverado truck then struck the Malibu, Maryland State Police said.

Two passengers in the Malibu -- a 30-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy -- were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The car's driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said. The two truck drivers and four other passengers in the vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Man shot to death in coin shop

A 30-year-old man who allegedly broke into an Glen Burnie coin shop was fatally shot on Christmas morning, police said.

About 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, police went to Arundel County Coin Shop, located at 7418 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd. Upon arrival, officers found the shooting victim, Byron Keith Phillip, of Chester, Md. He died at the scene, said Lt. John McAndrew of Anne Arundel County police.

A store employee told police that Phillip broke into the business while he was there. An altercation ensued, during which the employee shot Phillip. Phillip then ran out of the coin shop and collapsed, police said.

Authorities were continuing to investigate the incident and were not releasing the employee's name Tuesday afternoon.
