Bill Clinton named Father of the Year
He's not just a former president of the United States; he's also a father -- and a darn good one at that.
Bill Clinton was named Father of the Year by the National Father's Day Committee on Tuesday at a luncheon to benefit Save the Children in New York City, Us Weekly reports.
According to its website, "The National Father's Day Committee, an entity of the Father's Day/Mother's Day Council, each year confers Father of the Year Honors on contemporary lifestyle leaders of our culture whose lives are dedicated to family, citizenship, charity, civility, responsibility and reverence," with the objective of "enhanc[ing] the meaning of Father's Day and encourage universal observance."
Bill's 33-year-old daughter, Chelsea, presented him with the award, saying, "I don't need an award to tell me he's the best [dad] that I ever could have hoped for. But I'm grateful he's getting the recognition that I, of course, his unapologetically biased daughter, think he's always deserved."
"Of all the reasons that I'm proud of my father," she continued, "I'm most proud that he's my dad and that he's always been there for me. He has always provided me a safe place to land and a hard place from which to launch."
In his acceptance speech, Bill proved why he deserves the honor: "You could never have picked anyone happier, because seeing my daughter still makes me happier than anything else in the world."
During a more lighthearted moment of his speech, Bill told the audience that earlier in the day, his wife, Hillary Clinton, had sent him a text message (Texts from Hillary, anyone?). It said, "Congratulations. I think you deserve this." Bill explained that "in our family, that's a very big deal."
Bill joins the ranks of fathers like Douglas MacArthur (the first to be honored in 1942), Bing Crosby, Yogi Berra, Tom Brokaw, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Michael Bloomberg, Shaquille O'Neal and so many more who've been conferred this prestigious award.
Well, congratulations, Mr. President, and congrats to all the dads out there.
Father's Day is this Sunday, so don't forget to give your dad a big hug and thank him for all that he does.
