CHARLOTTE – Patrons at the CNN Grill — a full-service, invitation-only restaurant CNN operates alongside the conventions — noticed something thematic in the names of CNN brews on tap at the two different conventions. At the Republican National Convention in Tampa was the Old Elephant Foot India Pale Ale, while the Democratic Convention — renominating Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama — you could get bottles or draughts of Peacemaker Pale Ale.

But before you complain about CNN using the “Peacemaker” label for a drone-happy, Libya-invading, Guantanamo-perpetuating president, you should know CNN didn’t invent the names — these are existing names for existing recipes by local breweries.

Tampa Bay Brewing Company was brewing Old Elephant Foot before the GOP stampeded through, and North Carolina’s Lone Rider Brewing Co. already had Peacemaker in their arsenal, according to David Tackel of CEG, which has managed the CNN Grills since 2004.
