This family?s plan: A luxury home in horse country

Building the home at 2203 Monkton Road was all in the family for Don and Dave Johnson.

Forest Hill custom builder Don Johnson constructed a Southern-style colonial with wraparound porch atop a two-acre knoll for his brother Dave and wife Jennifer.

Dave Johnson, who works for CB Flooring (which is moving to a Chantilly, Va., office), supplied top-notch flooring throughout the house: Santos mahogany floors on the first floor, staircase and second-floor hallway, marble in the mudroom and checkerboard-patterned tumbled marble in the butler’s pantry.

The lower level, with rec room, granite-topped cherry wet bar, media room, full bath, fifth bedroom and wine cellar, is floored with cork.
The house is now on the market at a list price of $1.45 million.

Johnson and his family “love to sit on the porch and watch the world go by,” he said. Two sets of French doors with transoms open from the living and dining rooms onto a pillared porch with mahogany bead board ceiling, outdoor speakers, recessed lighting and hardwood floors.

Because their house is in Baltimore County horse country, the Johnsons see more equines, deer and birds from their pastoral perch than people and traffic.

Yet civilization is nearby. Picturesque Monkton is just down the road, with the stone Manor Tavern — a converted 1700s-era stable — a well-known local hang-out.

“It’s beautiful out here, very quiet yet convenient to everything,” said tavern owner Mark Greene.

Listing agent Karen Hubble Bisbee, of Hubble Bisbee Group, part of Coldwell Banker, noted the home’s many extras.

“What defines this house is the high level of finish,” she said. “Inside the first-floor arches, for instance, are intricate raised panels. Deep crown molding and wainscoting are everywhere,” she said.

Ceilings are 10 feet on the first floor, 9 feet on the second floor and lower level. Windows are Andersen Architectural Series and the exterior is low-maintenance HardiPlank and stone.

Designed by Rackl Gilbert Associates, Baldwin, the gourmet kitchen has Crystal custom wood cabinets, granite countertops, a cherry island, Bosch dishwasher and Viking convection double ovens, fridge and six-burner stove.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has its own dressing room with granite-topped vanity and sink as well as a sitting room with gas fireplace, one of four.

The Johnsons also spend time on the bluestone patio with built-in fireplace out back.
