OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — Ocean City and state emergency management officials have received numerous reports of tremors in the resort town, but a seismologist says the event was not an earthquake.
There are no reports of damage.
The reports of the tremors starting coming to Ocean City officials, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and in social media postings about noon on Thursday.
Ocean City officials posted on the town's Facebook page that residents also reported hearing a loud boom.
Won-Young Kim, a seismologist with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York, says the observatory's seismic stations don't so any strong signals associated with earthquake. He says the tremors and noise may have been caused by a sonic boom from a jet.
