PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Trinidad & Tobago's tourism minister has stepped down as police investigate assault allegations made against him by a former girlfriend.

Chandresh Sharma is accused of physically assaulting the woman in a shopping mall's parking lot March 12.

Accuser Sacha Singh says Sharma shoved her during an argument. She claims she suffered a mild concussion after hitting her head on a parked car.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Monday that she had accepted Sharma's resignation. She instructed the country's governor general to revoke his appointment as tourism minister.

The prime minister says she is committed to, in her words, "maintaining the high ideals upon which we were elected."

Sharma's resignation comes a week after the minister of people and social development was fired for behaving aggressively toward a flight attendant.
