Two firefighters and a civilian were taken to the hospital after an early-morning fire in Southeast D.C. Saturday.

An apartment building on the 400 block of Orange Street SE caught fire around 5 a.m. Saturday. D.C. firefighters helped five people escape the building, which suffered "fairly extensive" damage, said Lon Walls, the director of communications for D.C. Fire and EMS.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries -- burns to the face and neck -- and were taken to the hospital, Walls said. One has since been released.

A civilian suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to George Washington University Hospital, Walls added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Walls said.
