A man and a woman were slashed with an unknown object on a Metro platform early Saturday morning during an altercation between two groups of people.

Metro Spokeswoman Caroline Lukas said at about 2 a.m. on Saturday a verbal dispute took place between two groups of people -- one with about four individuals and the other with seven to 10 people -- at the Shaw-Howard University Metro platform.

During the altercation, a man and a woman from the smaller group were slashed with an unknown object and suffered lacerations to their hands and back. They were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The other group fled the scene before officers arrived at the scene. Police are currently investigating the incident.
