IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa's student newspaper is launching a new mobile app that will be available to readers for free.

Daily Iowan Publisher Bill Casey said Tuesday that 200 readers have downloaded the iPad app since its soft launch this week. He says the paper plans to publicize the app broadly starting Monday, and expects to reach 2,000 readers quickly.

Casey says the paper contracted with a California firm to build the platform and host the app, which will be a combination of what is in the hard copy of the newspaper and its website.

He says the goal is to reach students and others who use tablets and smartphones to get their news.

The Daily Iowan is the university's independent newspaper and publishes on weekdays during the school year.
