A former Prince George's County police officer was sentenced to 30 days of home detention for the March 2010 beating of a University of Maryland student.
James Harrison was convicted of second-degree assault in October. A judge sentenced Harrison on Friday to a year in jail, but suspended all but 30 days and ordered that time to be served at home, according to media reports.
The conviction stems from the assault of John McKenna, then 21, after the Maryland men's basketball team defeated Duke on March 3, 2010. Another officer, Reginald Baker, was tried with Harrison in Prince George's County Circuit Court but was acquitted.
Video of the incident shows McKenna half-skipping down the sidewalk, nearing police officers on horses. Baker then moved in and used his shield, slamming McKenna against the wall. Once McKenna was on the ground, both Baker and Harrison struck McKenna with batons.
A Prince George's County police spokesman said that Harrison retired from the department as of Nov. 30. Baker remains on paid administrative leave.
