The Pew Research Center reports that the U.S. birth rate dipped in 2011 to the lowest ever recorded.  (Reliable data in the United States only goes back to 1920.)

According to preliminary data, the overall birth rate in 2011 was 63.2 per 1,000 – nearly half of the births during the peak of the Baby Boom which recorded 122.7 per 1,000 in 1957.

Among the biggest drops is the birth rate for foreign-born women, plunging 14 percent from 2007 to 2010. The birthrate among Mexican women fell 23 percent in the same period of time.

The overall U.S. birth rate has declined 8 percent from 2007 to 2010.
