It was an ominous sign to many observers when Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby announced Thursday that Ukraine Defense Minister Pavel Lebedev had ignored calls all week from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.
Well, you all can breathe easier now, because someone finally picked up on the other line. Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, the U.S. commander in Europe and NATO supreme allied commander, said on Twitter Friday that he spoke to Adm. Yuri Llyin, Ukraine's military chief of staff.
Spoke with Ukrainian Chief of Staff, Adm. Yuri Llyin. Positive conversation and we agreed to continue an open dialogue.— Phil Breedlove (@PMBreedlove) February 21, 2014
It's still worth noting however that the Obama administration got put on hold for five days -- almost as if the Ukrainians weren't too concerned about upsetting the United States.
