UKRAINE'S INTERIOR MINISTRY SAYS SEVERAL OFFICERS ARE DEAD AND DOZENS WOUNDED IN GUNBATTLES WITH PRO-RUSSIAN MILITANTS.

THE VIOLENT CONFRONTATION TOOK PLACE IN THE EASTERN CITY OF SLOVYANSK.

SLOVYANSK IS AT THE HEART OF THE UPRISING IN EAST UKRAINE AGAINST THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IN KIEV.

UKRAINE FORCES MOVED ON THE PRO-RUSSIAN MILITANTS EARLY MONDAY MORNING FIGHTING PITCHED BATTLES IN THE STREETS.

PRO-RUSSIAN FORCES ARE BELIEVED TO NUMBER LESS THAN A THOUSAND.

WITNESSES REPORT GUNFIRE AND MULTIPLE EXPLOSIONS IN AND AROUND THE CITY OF 125-THOUSAND.

BOTH SIDES CONFIRMED FIGHTING AT SEVERAL LOCATIONS AROUND THE CITY.

AMBULANCES WERE SEEN SPEEDING THROUGH THE STREETS ON THE WAY TO LOCAL HOSPITALS.

IN ANOTHER STRATEGIC MOVE, THE UKRAINE GOVERNMENT REPORTEDLY SENT AN ELITE NATIONAL GUARD UNIT TO RE-ESTABLISH CONTROL IN THE SOUTHERN PORT CITY OF ODESA.

THE TWIN MOVES REFLECTED AN APPARENT ESCALATION OF EFFORTS TO BRING THE REGION BACK UNDER KIEV'S CONTROL.
