DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — A University of New Hampshire research center focused on developing new approaches to oil spills is funding three projects aimed at better understanding the impact of dispersed oil.

The UNH Coastal Response Research Center and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded the grants using $500,000 provided by Congress as a result of the Deepwater Horizon spill.

The money will go to the University of Maryland to study how dispersants and dispersed oil affects blue crabs, a Virginia consulting group that will look at the role of social media in communicating the risk of oil spills and a South Carolina company that will create a database on the effects of dispersed oil on marine life.
