A University of Maryland student who falsely claimed that she was robbed at gunpoint near the school's College Park campus last week has been charged, police said.

Teshauna Nicole Jones, 18, was charged Friday with making a false statement to a police officer, according to Prince George's County police.

On Tuesday, Jones told police that she was walking home from the College Park Metro station when she was robbed at gunpoint in the 4500 block of Paint Branch Parkway. Police officers and a K-9 team searched the area for the alleged robber.

But when detectives reviewed surveillance footage, they determined that the robbery had not happened. Jones then admitted to detectives that she made up the story because she owed a relative money, police said.
