RADFORD, Va. (AP) — U.S. District Judge James Turk has died. He was 91.

Alex Davis with De Vilbiss Funeral Home says Turk died Sunday at his home in Radford.

Turk was appointed to the federal bench by President Richard Nixon in 1972. He became a senior judge in 2002 and continued to hear cases.

Turk served in the Virginia Senate from 1959 to 1972. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a graduate of Roanoke College and Washington & Lee University's School of Law.

U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy said Monday in a statement that Turk worked to ensure that the federal judicial system was fair and unbiased in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia.

Davis says funeral arrangements are pending.
