HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana-Dakota Utilities is seeking a $3 million annual rate increase for nearly 81,000 natural gas customers in eastern Montana.

That 5.4 percent rate hike request comes eight months after a previous increase was approved by the Public Service Commission.

Company spokesman Mark Hanson tells Lee Newspapers of Montana the change would mean an average increase of $38 a year per residential customer.

The company is asking the PSC to grant a temporary 2.6 percent increase within a month while regulatory body considers the full jump.

The PSC approved a 2.6 percent rate increase for MDU natural gas customers in December.
