BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a smartphone app to help hikers and others identify trees.

Developed by researchers in the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech, the app includes details on nearly 1,000 woody plants and more than 6,400 images of leaves, bark, flowers, fruit and twigs.

The Virginia Tech Tree Identification app uses a smartphone's GPS to narrow the list of species native to an area. A hiker in the Blue Ridge Mountains, for instance, would find trees found in that region.

The app has other features as well to narrow a forest to a specific tree.

The app is available on Google Play.
