VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Beach man accused of decapitating his son will remain in the state mental health system's custody for another year.
Media outlets report that Joseph H. Hagerman III appeared Tuesday in Virginia Beach Circuit Court for an annual review of his status.
Hagerman was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2009.
He told authorities he decapitated his 5-year-old son to save the boy from "the anti-Christ." He also is accused of slashing his wife when she tried to save the child.
The next hearing is set for February 2015.
By law, Hagerman is entitled to annual reviews of his status for the first five years. After that, his status would be reviewed every other year.
