The Republican Party of Virginia is calling on the Mecklenburg County GOP to take down offensive photos of President Obama posted on the local group's Facebook page.

The photos depict Obama as a cavemen, a thug and a witch doctor. The site also includes a picture of someone making an obscene gesture at Obama's presidential bus and another of someone holding a sign linking Obama to Nazis.

"These kinds of images have no place in political discourse. Period," Pat Mullins, chairman of the state party, said in a statement. "They are offensive, tasteless, and should never have been posted anywhere, let alone a local unit's Facebook page. The Republican Party of Virginia condemns this sort of imagery in the strongest possible terms. I am in the process of contacting our Mecklenburg County unit to inform them that this is unacceptable behavior from any local unit associated with our party."

As of Wednesday, some of the pictures were still online and many have been on the web page for months, the Washington Post first reported Tuesday.

It's the second time in a year the Virginia GOP has been forced to disavow a local affiliate for inappropriate pictures. Last October, the Loudoun County Republican Party was admonished for circulating a flyer depicting Obama as a zombie with a bullet hole in his head.
