A million Virginians have signed up to receive notices from the Department of Motor Vehicles via email, text and phone messages instead of through traditional mail, saving the agency $590,000, Gov. Bob McDonnell said.

"I'm pleased that 1 million Virginians have opted for this environmentally-friendly service that helps save the commonwealth money and resources," McDonnell said in a statement.

The electronic initiative began in August 2010; McDonnell was the first to sign up. Now about one in five Virginia drivers are signed up.
