Va. school superintendents group names new head

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Association of School Superintendents is getting a new executive director.

Officials say Howard "Ben" Kiser was selected to the position and will be appointed by the group's board at a meeting on Sunday.

Kiser's term is set to begin July 1, after his retirement as superintendent of Gloucester County Schools.

He will replace Steven Staples, who was recently appointed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe as Virginia's new state superintendent of public instruction.

Kiser has served in that role for the last 11 years. He began his career as an Industrial Arts teacher at Greensville County High School in Emporia in 1974.
