A key Senate panel voted Monday to do away with a 136-year-old Virginia law that bans unmarried couples from living together.

The Senate Courts of Justice Committee approved legislation introduced by Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, that would repeal what the state defines as "lewd and lascivious cohabitation" -- men and women living together out of wedlock. The measure will go before the full Senate as early as Wednesday.

There are about 140,000 unmarried couples unlawfully living together in Virginia, Ebbin told The Associated Press. The archaic law is rarely enforced.
