Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., took time Tuesday morning to affirm that Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., was right about changing the “status quo” to help end sexual assaults in the military.

Both Paul and fellow conservative Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, joined a press conference with Boxer this morning in support of a bill pioneered by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., to remove handling military sexual assault cases from the chain of command.

“As a physician, I look at problems, and I try to find solutions,” Paul said, calling for justice for both the victim and the accused in sexual assault cases. “I’m concerned that victims of assault, though, may be deterred from reporting their assault if they have to report it to their boss.” Paul added that in his opinion, conservatives should support the measure, referring to Boxer’s remarks about past Defense Secretaries calling for “zero tolerance” for sexual assault without anything actually changing.
“The only thing standing in the way is just sort of the status quo, and Senator Boxer was actually right,” Paul stated. “Everyone says to her – they’re against sexual assault, why don’t we – if it appears that if there is some deterrence to victims reporting the crime – why don’t we fix it?”
