The United States Supreme Court says same-sex couples in the state of Virginia will not be able to marry until the high court has a chance to rule on the case.

The decision came down Wednesday afternoon, just hours before same-sex marriages could have begun in the commonwealth Thursday morning.

A United States district court judge struck down Virginia’s constitutional and statutory bans on same-sex marriage in February. A federal appeals court upheld that decision in July.

The U.S. Supreme Court will now likely rule on the case during the coming term.
