Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, received a standing ovation during his speech at First Baptist Dallas church on Sunday for calling to abolish the Internal Revenue Service.
Cruz reminded the congregation that the government agency was asking faith based groups for the “content of their prayers.”
Cruz joked that he wished that the group had responded with a quote from scripture: “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.”
Cruz added that the federal government had “no business whatsoever” asking any American for the content of their prayers.
“In my view the simplest and most direct solution is to abolish the IRS,” Cruz said emphatically as the congregation stood and cheered.
