Virginia stepfather charged in boy's shooting death

The stepfather of a 4-year-old Woodbridge boy who died after he accidentally shot himself has been arrested, police said.

Jasmine Darnell Matthews, 27, was charged Wednesday withcruelty and injuries to children, according to Prince William County police. He was released on a $20,000 unsecured bond.

The incident occurred on July 25 in the14800 block of Empire Street in Woodbridge. Police said that Matthewsleft a loaded handgun in another family member'struckoutside the home where Matthews and his stepson,Kyrell Kyyon McNeill,lived.

The truck had an unsecured sliding back window, police spokesman Officer Jonathan Perok said, and Kyrell was able to get into the truck and find the gun. Hewas accidentally shot in the head and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
