NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is celebrating its new $4 million animal wellness facility.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday.
Officials say the zoo needed a larger animal hospital and diet kitchen to provide optimal care for its animals.
The new veterinary hospital and animal wellness campus was designed to deliver the highest level of animal care and provide an educational experience.
The zoo's staff is currently working out of the facility but the campus is set to open to the public this summer.
Visitors will soon be allowed to look through viewing windows into treatment, surgery and laboratory rooms, and the animal diet kitchen.
The zoo exhibits more than 400 animals on more than 50 acres.
