Euro NCAP has tested a 2013 model year Volvo XC60 equipped with a system called City Safety. City Safety uses a Lidar sensor to help a distracted driver to avoid an accident or to mitigate its severity. In the speed range 0-50km/h, City Safety will apply the brakes autonomously to try to stop the vehicle before the accident or, if that is not possible, to reduce the speed of the impact as much as possible. No warning is given as there is too little time in such situations for a driver to react sufficiently quickly. City Safety can be switched off by the driver but defaults back on again at the start of every journey.
