A kitten has been stolen from a Washington Humane Society adoption center, officials said.

Callista, a kitten who is about 8 weeks old, disappeared late Sunday afternoon at the Humane Society's adoption center on New York Avenue NE, officials said. The organization is offering a $1,000 reward for the kitten's safe return and/or the identification of the thief or thieves.

"It's hard to believe someone would stoop so low and do this," Scott Giacoppo, the organization's vice president of external affairs, said in a statement. "Our adoption process is so easy, it only takes a few minutes and in the end your pet is completely vaccinated, spayed or neutered and you have a long-term relationship with our organization in case you ever need help."

The Humane Society is reviewing security footage as part of their investigation. Anyone with information on the theft can call (202) 576-6664.
