CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — The Allegany County Library System says it's suspending its bookmobile service to contain costs.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the service will end July 1. The bookmobile makes weekly stops at remote and locations and around the county.

Library Director John Taube says the decision reflects a lack of state and local funding. He says the service could be restored if economic conditions improve. And Taube says the vehicle may still be available for special events.

He says it costs nearly twice as much to circulate materials on the bookmobile than at other library locations.

Taube says suspending bookmobile operations will enable the library system to maintain current hours at its brick-and-mortar locations.
