Administration officials say across-the-board budget cuts are so devastating that the White House starting Saturday will cancel all public tours behind the gates of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But yes, President Obama will still hit the links.

When asked whether Obama would scrap golf outings in the wake of so-called sequestration, White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest didn’t even answer.

Instead, he ripped Republicans for “cheering” on the cuts and greeting them as “great news.” Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, sent the president a letter this week asking him to give up golf instead of canceling the tours.

The White House said they are halting the tours to cut down on expenses for the Secret Service, which monitors the self-guided excursions. But as critics point out, Obama plays golf with more than just an entourage of buddies — the watchful eyes of the Secret Service are there as well.
