After First Lady Michelle Obama surprised the country by presenting the Best Picture award via the White House, her communications director sent out the following statement.

“The Academy Awards approached the First Lady about being a part of the ceremony. As a movie lover, she was honored to present the award and celebrate the artists who inspire us all – especially our young people – with their passion, skill and imagination.”

According to the pool report, the White House kept her appearance “hush-hush in advance” of the ceremony.
