White House blames ‘fiscal cliff’ for missed budget deadline

The White House on Monday missed the Feb. 4 deadline for filing its fiscal 2014 budget, blaming the uncertainty caused by “fiscal cliff” negotiations for the failure.

“[B]ecause these issues were not resolved until the American Taxpayer Relief Act was enacted on January 2, 2013, the Administration was forced to delay some of its FY 2014 Budget preparations, which will in turn delay the Budget’s submission to Congress,” wrote Jeffrey Zients, Office of Management and Budget Deputy Director, in a letter to House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan on  January 11. The letter mentioned no timeline for the budget's tardy release.

This marks the fourth time in five years that President Obama has failed to meet the budget deadline. The only year the White House submitted its budget request on time was in 2010.

President Obama is in good company. The Democrat-controlled Senate has failed to pass a budget for almost four years, forcing Congress to miss its own April 15 deadline each time.

By missing the deadline yet again, the president is “shirking his duty,” said House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan.

“I’m disappointed the President has missed his deadline,” Ryan said in a statement on Monday. "But I’m not surprised. In four of the last five years, he’s failed to submit his budget on time. We still don’t know when we’ll receive the president’s request. And for nearly four years, Senate Democrats haven’t passed a budget at all....Every time the President and Senate Democrats shirk their duty, they delay choices we need to make. We’ve still got time, but it’s dwindling. Every missed deadline is a missed opportunity. We need to get serious about spending now.”
