The White House made the announcement as Republicans accuse the administration of blocking access to the memorial to inconvenience the public as both sides point fingers over the shutdown.
Carney blasted Republicans for using the World War II memorial for political gain.
“The government shut down when Republicans in Congress shut it down,” Carney said in response to a question about Honor Flight members being turned away from the memorial on Tuesday.
Veterans groups crossed barriers erected in front of the memorial on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Interior Department allowed veterans groups to visit the memorial, saying their gathering was a First Amendment protest.
GOP lawmakers have tried to pass piecemeal bills that would keep national parks and monuments open, but Democrats have rejected those.
Carney pressed Republicans to pass a “clean” continuing resolution, saying it would end the government shutdown and reopen all federal monuments.
