Remember Richard Mourdock, the Republican Senate nominee from Indiana who got into trouble over comments about rape? The state treasurer’s comments this weekend got him in hot water again, as he compared the direction of the United States to Germany under Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. According to the Indianapolis Star, Mourdock said, "The people of Germany in a free election selected the Nazi Party because they made great promises that appealed to them because they were desperate and destitute. And why is that? Because Germany was bankrupt. The truth is, 70 years later, we are drifting on the tides toward another beachhead and it is the bankruptcy of the United States of America." The newspaper reported the reaction ranged from “shock to befuddlement." Mourdock said he wasn’t making a direct comparison to President Obama and the Democratic Party in his remarks to the Indiana GOP.
