Wife of Rep. Andy Harris dies suddenly

The wife of Maryland’s sole Republican House member has died.

Sylvia "Cookie" Harris, wife of Rep. Andy Harris, died suddenly on Thursday, according to the congressman’s office.

The two were married for more than 30 years and had five children and two grandchildren. Sylvia Harris was to turn 58 on Aug. 31.

“The family is thankful for thoughts and prayers that so many have offered already and appreciates privacy during this time,” a statement from Harris said.

According to wbaltv.com, Baltimore County EMS crews responded to the Harris home in Cockeysville to aid a woman who was suffering from cardiac arrest.

Harris, an anesthesiologist took office in 2011 and represents Maryland’s 1st Congressional District, which covers the state’s Eastern Shore.
