A woman was found dead Monday when fire officials were called to respond to an apartment fire in Fairfax County. Investigators are calling the death a homicide.

The fire started around 6:10 a.m. in the 12000 block of Waterside View Drive in Reston.

Officials say a neighbor saw smoke coming from a second-story apartment and called authorities, who then forced their way into the unit and found the unidentified woman's body. Police say the victim had trauma to her upper body.

Although the fire was confined to just one apartment, officials are reporting some damage to surrounding units.

The fire and the cause of death are under investigation by the Fairfax County police and fire departments.
