Woman killed in early-morning Rockville house fire

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — An 81-year-old woman has been killed in a fire in her Rockville home.

Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer (PAIR'-ing-er) says crews arrived early Thursday morning to find heavy smoke coming from the home. A man standing outside said his mother was still inside.

Piringer says firefighters found the woman on the second floor and had to rescue her out a window and down a ladder.

They took her to a local hospital with extremely critical injuries.

Piringer says that the woman died shortly after.

Fire officials believe the blaze began in the home's basement and are investigating the cause.

Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

Piringer says the home didn't have smoke alarms.
