A 20-year-old woman was raped late Thursday night in Alexandria.

The woman, an Alexandria resident, was walking from the intersection of Eisenhower Avenue and Van Dorn Street when a man approached her. The suspect displayed a knife and demanded money, and the woman told him that she had none, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

The man then grabbed the woman and pulled her over a guardrail and into the bushes near the intersection of Van Dorn Street and Courtney Avenue, officials said. He sexually assaulted her before fleeing on foot, heading north toward S. Pickett Street, police said.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5-foot-7 and about 150 pounds. He had short black hair, was clean shaven and was wearing a dark brown T-shirt, blue jeans, tennis shoes and black framed glasses.

Detectives think that this incident is unrelated to recent assaults in the Holmes Run Parkway area.
