A pedestrian was struck in a hit-and-run collision in Silver Spring, Montgomery County police said.

Police were called to the incident, at University Boulevard East and East Wayne Avenue, at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a preliminary investigation, a woman was trying to cross from the westbound lanes of University to the eastbound lanes of the road, outside of the crosswalk. Witnesses told police that the striking vehicle -- described as a black pickup truck -- tried to avoid hitting the woman but continued without stopping after it struck her.

A separate crash involving four vehicles occurred as a result of the hit-and-run incident, police spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Innocenti said. A vehicle stopped so that aid could be given to the pedestrian and others behind that vehicle tried to stop, leading to vehicles being rear-ended.

The woman was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Innocenti said.
