A woman's legs were severely injured Sunday when she was struck by wheels of a tractor-trailer in Silver Spring, police said.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road. Montgomery County police said the woman was crossing southbound Georgia Avenue against a "Don't Walk" signal while the tractor-trailer, which had a green traffic signal arrow, was making a left turn onto the road.

The woman had stopped at the median strip but then continued walking and was struck by two of the tractor-trailer's four double rear wheels. The driver, 45-year-old Jose Antonio Arguelles, stopped his vehicle and remained at the scene. Police said that Arguelles, of Miami, was determined not to be at fault in the incident.

The woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Her identity had not been confirmed late Sunday.
